Lady Midnight
Lady Midnight - Cassandra Clare (The Dark Artifices #1)
Blurb: In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.
A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.
Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.
Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?
The darkly magical world of Shadowhunters has captured the imaginations of millions of readers across the globe. Join the adventure in Lady Midnight, the long-awaited first volume of a new trilogy from Cassandra Clare.

My Review
“When you love someone, they become a part of who you are. They're in everything you do. They're in the air you breathe and the water you drink and the blood in your veins. Their touch stays on your skin and their voice stays in your ears and their thoughts stay in your mind. You know their dreams because their nightmares pierce your heart and their good dreams are your dreams too. And you don't think they're perfect, but you know their flaws, the deep-down truth of them, and the shadows of all their secrets, and they don't frighten you away; in fact you love them more for it, because you don't want perfect. You want them. You want—"
Let me start this book review by saying that.. the above quote is one of the best things I have ever heard... Honestly, it broke me because OH MY GOSH THE LOVE! THE STORY! THE CHARACTERS!
and that is why I am giving this book 5/5 stars.
So I have read both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices and I loved both of them. However, I loved Lady Midnight. The characters and the world building just.. it pulled me in again. I missed being in the Shadow Hunter world, and that's why I decided to re-read it (hence why I am writing this review).
So in Lady Midnight, we are in the Los Angeles Institute with Emma and the Blackthorns. Emma and Julian are parabati! And I just got lost in the world of shadowhunters again and I loved it so much. I love the way Emma and Julian communicate.. its such a small detail but it is something SO IMPORTANT TO ME AND AHHH! We met all of the Blackthorns apart from the absent Helen due to sad circumstances :( AND THE WHOLE FAMILY IS CUTE, ADORABLE AND MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS!
We were also introduced to the new character of Cristina Rosales and let me tell you, this girl is strong and wonderful and I love her character soooo much! She moves to the institute to get away from Mexico and she becomes one the main and important characters! She also becomes Emma's best friend and awwww shadowhunter best friend goals! I don't want to spoil anything but man I WAS SHIPPING SO HARD!
Now brings me on to the topic of love! Just like every other Cassandra Clare book, there is romance and love present. HOWEVER! This book goes into a different realm of love, there is brotherly and sisterly love, forbidden love and ones that should not exist!
“Being told that love is forbidden does not kill love. It strengthens it.” The above quote is also one of my favourites because it's such a simple line yet it means so much and changes so much!
So, those are some of the reasons why I think Lady Midnight is 5 stars and woah it was an amazing, awesome, a roller coaster of emotions, action packed and it was definitely a thrill ride! I honestly can't wait to see them all again in Lord of Shadows and see how everything pans out!
